Farm Dams and Valley Tanks

Construction of earth dams, valley tanks and water pans to store rainwater for livestock and irrigation.

About Farm Dams and Valley Tanks

Farm Dams and Valley Tanks

A farm dam collects runoff in the rainy season for use through the dry months. We investigate the catchment and site, excavate and compact the embankment, shape the spillway and finish the reservoir with attention to safety, siltation and seepage. Larger dams may require a design by an engineer and permits from the water authority.

What we do

  • Site and catchment assessment
  • Siting, setting out and design of the embankment and spillway
  • Excavation, core trench and compacted embankment construction
  • Spillway, inlet and outlet works
  • Protective fencing and stabilising grass cover
  • Advice on silt control and water use

What we need from you to quote

  • Farm location, and a sketch or photos of the proposed site
  • Intended uses and daily water demand, such as livestock or irrigation
  • Catchment area, stream or runoff pattern
  • Soil type, especially clay availability for the core
  • Access for heavy excavation plant
  • Any permit or authority requirements for storing water in your area
